Fluid Mechanics Lab

Pressure and absolute/gauge conversion, the gas laws solved for whichever variable is missing, continuity through a pipe contraction drawn to scale, and fluid power. Covers §9.16–9.23.

p = F/A and Absolute ↔ Gauge
Combined Gas Law: p₁V₁/T₁ = p₂V₂/T₂
Leave exactly ONE field blank — the lab solves for it. Boyle (T constant), Charles (p constant), and Gay-Lussac (V constant) are special cases: just keep that pair equal.
Continuity: A₁v₁ = A₂v₂
Pipe contraction to scale — same volume per second must squeeze through the throat, so it speeds up. FIG. E06-1
Fluid Power: P = p·Q
Continuity is conservation of matter in disguise: what flows in must flow out, so A·v is the same at every station of an incompressible stream. Halve the diameter and the speed quadruples — area goes with d².
